Who are you? Please introduce yourself
Anne Fox. I live in Ireland and have worked as a professional translator for the best part of 35 years. I’m hardly a newcomer!
I care deeply about the profession and try to stay sharp by keeping up my CPD and attending subject-specific training events. If I want to continue to work for interesting clients, then I have to be better than the machine.
Do you translate, interpret, or both? What are your areas of specialism?
I translate. My areas of specialisation are corporate communications, finance and sustainability. I’m very interested in sustainable finance and macroeconomics.
Why did you decide to get into translation or interpreting?
I came to the profession by a circuitous route.
Although a love of languages and literature was always very much alive in the background, I tried my hand at various careers: music teaching, academic administration and publishing. But it wasn’t until I returned from living abroad – with Spanish and some Russian now added to the mix – that I landed in translation.
My initial motivation was extremely practical. I wanted to be my own boss, earn a living and be present to bring up two small children.
It’s a decision I’ve never regretted.
What’s your favourite type of project?
Anything to do with the global economy, sustainability and green finance. Policy documents are also something I enjoy working on.
What do you do outside of translation or interpreting?
Outside of work – and reading – my main interests are music and art. I particularly love the opportunity to attend live music and regularly go to exhibitions.
